The story of Marva Stewart Shepherd is a coming of  age story told in a series of flashbacks. Marva, an attractive 40 something year  old woman has lost her charismatic edge due to a series of unfortunate
incidents. She loses herself in the process of caring for others. The foul
treatment she receives from the authoritative men in her life causes her to take  an extreme vacation to reflect on the status of her life. What happens during
this sea-side vacation sends Marva on a very interesting  journey.

The Retreat
The stars shine brightly in the sky on this cool, crisp night. They  beckon of things to come. Just what is the meaning of all these stars? I  question. Perhaps because the air is so unpolluted we can see far more stars
than we would see in the city. One of our companions announces that the Lord  always shows her a sign when she is traveling. The stars are so bright; we can  see the big dipper, the little dipper and the other significant bodies in the galaxy.
Of  my companions we are first a small group of people with probably only one degree of separation, we are unknown to one another. We’ve come from Atlanta, Washington, DC and Virginia.Christ is the bond. We cannot know all that God may say to us on this trip however we search diligently for his soft, sweet voice.
Yes, there is a hesitation being on these grounds surrounded by woods. Perhaps seeing the tail end or the gnarling teeth of an alligator, and fear of the unfamiliar enters my mind. Having flashbacks of horror movies that I have reluctantly watched with family sends a déjà` vue shiver up my spine. Meeting God at a secluded spa and worshipping Him with those outside of my denomination is grounds enough to go foreward.
Would God be there to protect me from the possibility of a mystical, spiritist movement? I remembered thoughtfully that I never go anywhere foreign where the Lord doesn't show up and charges my faith. I had to put my imagination on hold. My God is my shield and buckler, He takes me outside of my comfort zone to show some interesting things about life and myself. He is always present.
